After the initial greeting, one usually says something such as “How are you?”  A Spanish speaker would say, “Como esta?” (formal) or “Como estas?” (informal), or perhaps “Que passa?” (What’s happening?”), “Como se va?” (formal) or “Como te vas?” (informal) for “How is it going with you?”.

“Good morning” is “Buenos dias” in Spanish while “Good afternoon” is Buenas tardes” and “Good night” is Buenos noches.”

Should you inquire as to someone’s name you would ask, “Como te llamas?” (informal) or “Como se llama?” (formal).

In a French dictionary word restaurant would be Café. We use that word in English as well as we use the word restaurant. A restaurateur in French is a person who owns a restaurant. In that language it’s a masculine noun.

In a French dictionary pomme is a potato. When turned into french fries the French would call it pommes frites. That was once explained on the popular children’s show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. The phrase pommes de la soupe would be potato soup. If you wanted a baked potato with some cheese on it you might ask for pommes du fromage.

Firstly, you should have a clear reason for learning Spanish. You should create a very clear reason in your mind as to why you are leaning – it might be to pass an exam for a job application or promotion, to be able to speak well enough to go on holiday to Spain in a month, or to be able to talk with your Spanish girlfriend. You will see that the majority of students do not have a very clear understanding of why they are learning, and so they learn slowly because they do not know what to aim for. Just by knowing where you are heading you will learn much faster, and with greater ease. This sounds quite obvious, but many students do not do it when they begin.

Secondly, turn this reason into a clear and qualitfiable goal. For example, if you want to pass an exam for a job application, study that exam before you even begin lessons – know what it contains and what exactly you will need to know to pass it. Then study exactly what the exam requires you to know. If you want to learn Spanish so that you can get by on holiday in Spain when you go in one month, think carefully about what language you will need exactly, and don’t spend time on anything else – focus on the practical language that will be useful to you (restaurant language, emergency language, etc). If you just want to learn to a decent conversational level, make your goal to be able to talk for one whole day, or week, purely in Spanish.

Now you have a clear target to head towards, your mind will focus on the aspects of Spanish that you need to achieve it. If your subconscious mind has a reason to absorb information and clear goal, it will absorb twice as much and twice as easily.

The third step is to create some time pressure for yourself. Set the exam for six months time, for example. And make sure that you are going to take that exam in 6 months no matter what. Promise to yourself that on your holiday you will talk to no English-speakers for a week. If your goal is to become fluent, ask someone you know that speaks fluent Spanish to speak with you only in Spanish for one whole day in a month. Make sure that they hold you to it.

This pressure will focus your mind wonderfully during classes. You will notice that you learn so much faster than your fellow students who don’t have a good reason, goal or any kind of pressure like you do!

Fourthly, choose carefully exactly how you’re going to learn Spanish. Classes in schools are often not the best way to learn Spanish. the pace will always slow right down – to the pace of the slowest, or at best an average student, while the teacher’s attention is divided between many students.

Actually going to stay in a Spanish-speaking country is the best way to advance fast. The next best way is to find yourself a high-quality home-study Spanish course (there are many very good ones out there today) and study at your own pace, making sure that you follow step 5. Over 95% of students learning Spanish never take this step. Most students study in a classroom for months, and even years, and then have real trouble understanding native-spoken Spanish, even though that was the whole point of learning Spanish in the first place. So don’t you be one of them!
